This Will Blow Your Mind

This post comes to you smack between Earth Day and Arbor Day.

I love the symbolism of these two days.

Encouraging all of us to take a moment to step outside, breathe the fresh air…and make a little more of it.

If you’re like me, Earth Day brings the iconic vision of our planet to your mind:

Beautiful, lush green against deep, vibrant blue oceans.

I mean, that is what everyone sees when they look at the earth, right?

If that’s what you think…I’m sorry to say you are wrong.

Even such a fundamental thing you take as a given…isn’t true for everyone.

Right about now you might be thinking I’m crazy, but hear me out.

Did you know that in Japan there is no word for the color blue?

In fact, “blue” is a relatively new color to humans, and wasn’t a word in many ancient languages.

This includes Japanese, Greek, Chinese, and Hebrew.

There is no evidence of the color blue existing – it was instead a shade of green.

But how is this possible?

Every parent out there has had their child ask, “Why is the sky blue?”

This must be proof that everyone sees blue, right?

Again…wrong.

One researcher who knew of this phenomenon raised his daughter careful to never describe the sky as blue to her.

One day, he asked her what color it was.

Her immediate answer?

White.

(I know, I can feel your mind exploding from the shock!)

So, what should you learn from this?

Even things you know are “true” are not truths for everyone.

Remember my third foundation Shift Your Perspective?

Well, now is your chance.

Anything you assume is a given…

Something that everyone knows…

What if they didn’t?

What if that wasn’t true?

What if their truth is different from yours?

What could you learn from someone who doesn’t recognize the color blue (but can instead see shades of green you can’t discern)?

What could they tell you about water and the sky and our earth?

What could you tell them if you took the time?

If you apply this to your business, what amazing things are you missing out on?

There are so many things we all take for granted, but a little shift in perspective can make all the difference.

And speaking of making a difference…don’t forget to plant a tree!

Until then…stay passionate!
